Hair Testing

Another option in substances of abuse testing is through the analysis of hair. The pros and cons of hair over urine testing should be considered on the basis of your specific needs.

The advantage of either is dependent on the strengths and weaknesses of each. For example, hair testing provides a history of use or non-use from approximately 7 to 10 days prior to sample acquisition to typically 30 to 90 days, dependent upon the length of the sample taken. It does not, however, identify current use.

Urinalysis testing identifies only current usage. The opportunity window is approximately 2 to 3 days for most substances and up to 30 days for THC (marijuana).

Additionally, each method also has its own challenges. For example, hair testing assumes your applicant/donor has sufficient hair to be tested. Buzz cuts or baldness can be problematic. Urine, on the other hand, can be more easily diluted or substituted, which is not a problem with hair. Both test variations are accurate and forensically sound.

Cost, availability and turnaround time (availability of results from time of collection) are also considerations to take into account.
